You know them by many names: arteries, veins, and capillaries but what these all have in common is that these are blood vessels that keep you alive by circulating blood throughout your body. Arteries are the blood vessels that carry blood to and from the heart; veins carry deoxygenated blood from the tissues back to the heart which is why veins are usually blue in color; and finally capillaries are the smallest vessels which is part of the microcirculation system. Blood vessels no matter how they are referenced and what their function is, is the means by which your blood flows and thus is at the very heart (pun intended) of maintaining a healthy body. Heart disease starts and stops with your blood vessels and let’s examine the issues on how these blood vessels can become damaged beginning a chain of events that could lead to a heart attack or stroke and what you can do to counteract them. The path to a heart attack is usually a two step process. When the arteries narrow, the medical term is atherosclerosis, which by itself does not cause heart attacks. The events that precipitate a heart attack are a blood clot (thrombosis) and constriction and/or spasm of an artery also known as vasoconstriction. Now the arteries become diseased when plaque is formed in the vessel interior. When that plaque expands, the wall is pushed out and the opening where the blood flows through is narrowed. Narrowed arteries damage the blood passing through them and clotting can form where the plaque located. If you have a cut blood platelet cells clot to keep you from bleeding to death, but when the platelets are in the blood vessel these platelets can interrupt the flow of blood. These clots can lodge in the narrow arteries of the heart also called "coronary arteries" and will shut off the blood flow through that artery. Ever hear of the expression of someone having a coronary? That happens when what doctors call "coronary thrombosis" occurs. When a blood clot shuts off the flow of blood in the coronary artery, the region of the heart fed by the artery is starved of oxygen and nutrients, which results in the death of those cells, which is an infarct and that is the classic heart attack, called an acute myocardial infarction or AMI for short. One common cause to damaged blood vessels are your cholesterol levels. Since cholesterol is not soluble in blood, it is carried through the blood in particles called lipoproteins. The two important lipoproteins are the low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and the high density lipoproteins (HDL). Having high cholesterol is when you have excessive amounts of LDL cholesterol in your bloodstream leaving too many fat deposits for the HDL to clear out. That imbalance of your cholesterol levels can be caused by your dietary intake or lack of exercise. The fat stored in your body is used for energy and the LDL carries the fat deposits to the cells which [...]

The fat stored in your body is used for energy and the LDL carries the fat deposits to the cells which supplies that energy. A lack of a proper diet and exercise regimen aids in the buildup of LDL cholesterol in your blood which can lead to the formation of plaque which can lead to clots. Another theory to the increase of LDL cholesterol is when the LDL becomes damaged by oxidation that is by free radicals. This occurs when the oxidized LDL infiltrates the artery wall causing your white blood cells to be attracted to where this is occurring to form cholesterol deposits.

Other contributing factors to unhealthy blood vessels are when the blood platelets become activated when there is no bleeding. Platelets, which again play a major role in the process of coagulation of blood to arrest bleeding become activated and they still tend to aggregate or clump together and initiate an undesirable blood clot which can block blood flow through the vessel and that can also lead to a heart attack or stroke. When these clots are stationary they are called a thrombus and when these clots travel through the vessel it is called an embolism. Platelets can be activated by tobacco smoke and stress, as well as by diabetes and certain nutritional deficiencies and as people age a greater percentage of these platelets can become undesirably activated. Stress produces the same undesirable activation of blood platelets that smoking, diabetes and nutritional deficiencies do. When you are under stress, your adrenaline really flows. Adrenaline activates blood platelets to be prepared to clump together and form a blood clot, this natural reaction is a holdover from when humans were under the consistent treat of being attacked by wild animals many years ago. Lastly, adrenaline causes blood vessels to constrict and the result of that is high blood pressure. Too much stress can cause permanent constriction of the blood vessels as well as continuously sticky platelets.

There are several routes you can take to maintain healthy blood vessels; there are prescription medications for everything these days which includes medications for reducing your cholesterol, blood pressure and even stress. But understand what comes with these medications, the side effects and the impact it can have on your lifestyle. You can also seek natural alternatives; there are powerful antioxidants available which will naturally help you maintain your cholesterol levels which in turn will promote healthy blood vessels. Antioxidants will also combat the free radicals within your body. Having healthy blood vessels also means having healthy blood pressure and as for the stress there are natural supplements which can help you reduce your stress. As always, when considering natural supplements as an alternative have a discussion with your health care professional to see if this route is right for you, especially if you are already on prescription medications for any specific condition. Before having that discussion do your research and be prepared to discuss all of the alternatives available. You steer the ship of your life and you need to look at all of the options available to you to live a long and healthy life.

Do you know what peripheral artery disease is? What you don't know about this condition could kill you.

Coronary artery disease is a fairly well known condition. However, it has a cousin that is much less well known; peripheral artery disease. Both conditions can do the same things, become constricted by plaque and throw blood clots. One of the problems is that P.A. D. is harder to detect, particularly when it involves blood vessels deep in the legs.

Symptoms:

Many people with this disorder have few or no symptoms at all. However, some may occur especially as the problem progresses. Pain when walking, loss of hair on the legs, a reduction in toenail growth and shiny skin can all indicate P.A.D. Weak pulse in the legs and feet or cold skin in the region also may occur.

Causes:

The most common cause is hardening of the arteries. As mentioned above, most of the focus for this problem is on the heart, but it can and does affect every blood vessel in your body. As the plaque builds up, it restricts blood flow.

Injuries to your legs can also cause the problem, due this time at least in part to scarring. Other causes are rare, but include swelling in your blood vessels or oddities with your tendons and ligaments.

Your risk of developing this condition worsen with age, if you smoke or if you are diabetic. Overweight people are also at higher risk. Those with a family history of the condition have an increased chance.

What can happen:

Three major problems may occur if you have this condition, especially if it is untreated. You are at risk of losing the limb if circulation is slowed enough. A blood clot can finish the shut off of the artery, but it can also break loose. If that happens, chances are good that it will proceed to your heart, your brain and/or your lungs. If that happens, a heart attack, stroke or pulmonary embolism are probable.

What you can do:

Knowing you have the disorder is the first step to treating it. A variety of tests will probably be done, including an angiogram. Once it has been diagnosed, your doctor will give you a list of things to do and things to avoid.

You may find yourself on a whole battery of medications, depending on the cause. Blood thinners, blood pressure medications, cholesterol lowering drugs and some for pain are probable. If you are a diabetic, medications that lower blood sugar could be added.

If the problem is bad enough, you may require angioplasty or surgery. Angioplasty is done usually while you are a wake and through an incision in your groin. It will be threaded through your blood vessels until it gets to the problem area, where it will open it with a balloon. A stent may be placed in the artery to keep it open.

Lifestyle changes may also be required. Controlling your blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol levels will be required, so a new diet will be in order. Monitored exercise may also be recommended, probably through physical therapy.

This disorder is not well known, but it may be quietly harming many. If you are at risk, talk to your doctor about prevention methods. Finding it before it’s too late is the best way to remain healthy.

This is related to the weak of your body health. One of common disease that usually attacks people due to bad living style is heart attack. Heart attack is usually attacked people that aged over 30.This disease comes because of the high accumulation of cholesterol. Usually it is got from unhealthy menu, bad behaviors, such as smoking and drinking, and also lack of exercises. It is a dangerous disease that has no medicine for the patients. It also becomes the highest cause of death for many people.

Actually our body needs cholesterol to synthesize vitamin D for our bone strength. But excessive amount of cholesterol may be harmful. If you do not want to experience having heart attack or high blood pressure, you have to fight in controlling your cholesterol. There are many ways to control your health. First, you have to control your menu. Then you also need to have regular exercises. But, that is not enough. You need something that able to control your hormone and organ function inside your body. Using vitamins and supplement can be a good idea. Based on many experiments, fish oil has significant effect to lower cholesterol level in large scale. The Omega-3 inside will slow down TRIGLYCERIDES to avoid fatal heart disease for people that suffer from Hypertension. Moreover, Omega-3 also plays important rules to give more nutrition into human brain.

However, you have to be careful in selecting fish oil for cholesterol treatment realizing that there are many brands in the market. To avoid having toxin in your fish supplements, you have to select one that passes molecularly distillation process. Then, you also have to select one that high for DHA in the ingredients. The last is you need to avoid buying supplements made from rancid fishes.

There are many different kinds of cholesterol. When you hear that word I’m sure your thinking "ew," Am I right? Well let me tell you it is not as bad as you think, because all cholesterol is not bad. HDL2 and HDL3 are good and the not so good are VLDL and then the really bad one is LDL. Because of how we consume fast food more people are at high risk of heart disease now than ever before. This has defiantly put a toll on us as a nation. Persons that don’t eat well are punishing their bodies, minds, and souls with this crap. Not to say that it’s not OK to once in awhile treat yourself to something that you just can’t stop craving. And TV commercials do not help, that is for sure.

Think of the high levels of cholesterol that are running through your bloodstream after you eat that burger and fries. That is what causes heart and blood vessel diseases. What if you injected the fat from that super-sized burger and fries into your bloodstream? That is essentially what you are doing. I know nobody wants to hear this, but maybe you will think twice before you dig around in your car for change for one of these "tasty burgers." Love that line, from Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction? Great Line. Anyways, my point-it is ok to eat fast food but just wisely and not everyday. So when you do have it you will enjoy it enough not to go back again for a while. That is why I say, "wait until you have a craving that has been hanging on for awhile then pick your best options like minus the mayo and no cheese. And make it big! Sounds like I’m contradicting myself. I’m not. Letting you order the same but with options really does help. Omitting the extra fat like the mayo and cheese. You should be ok, because you don’t want to leave yourself unsatisfied.

Things that can help to add flavor are things like onions, mustard and salsa. You don’t want to leave yourself hungry; you are apt to run for the boarder. For real I have done this more than once. Then you really are going to be bummed.

Cholesterol is a terrible, and awful word. So is death. Many lives and billions of dollars in disability and medical costs have cost us gravely. You think we would wake the heck up! You can get treatment for this disease, with exercise. Many people can get treated for high cholesterol without medication. Paying closer attention to what your eating can make a large difference to your cholesterol and to your waistline. Drink more liquids and exercise for 3 to 5 days a week. It doesn’t have to be exhausting, just moderate at best. Please drink what you want, if you don’t like the taste of diet don’t drink it. Why torture yourself? It’s bad enough when you find out you have this disease. Exercising will transform your body by rearranging your levels of cholesterol. This is the way to a great start to reducing your chance of getting any heart diseases. Good Luck to you!

New at this and really enjoy it.

Most are great sources of dietary fiber, complex carbs, and vitamins. The American Heart Association recommends that you eat foods that are high in complex carbs and fiber. Below are some tips for making healthy food choices:

Coconut is high in saturated fat, while olives are high in monounsaturated fats and calories. You should use these items sparingly to avoid getting too many calories from fat.

When vegetable grains are cooked, saturated fat or cholesterol is often added. For example, egg yolks may be added to bread or even pasta.

Processed, canned, or preserved vegetables may also contain added sodium. With some people, too much sodium (salt) may lead to high blood pressure. There are some food companies that are actually canning vegetables with less salt. You can look for these in the market area or choose fresh and even frozen vegetables.

Nuts and seeds tend to be high in calories and fat, although a majority of the fat is polyunsaturated or monounsaturated. There are some varieties, macadamie nuts for example, that are also high in saturated fat.

Foods that are high in soluble fiber are a great choice as well. Examples include oat bran, oatmeal, beans, peas, rice bran, barley, and even apple pulp.

Whenever you are looking for healthy food choices, always make sure you read the nutrition label or information about the food. You can then determine what the food contains and how healthy it truly is for your body. By taking your time and making your healthy food choices wisely, you’ll have a lifetime to enjoy the foods that will take care of you.

Actually, heart disease is the number one health threat for women. Women need to take charge of their heart care. We offer some suggestions on how to get started.

Track your numbers. The main numbers you need to track and the optimum levels you should strive for are blood pressure (120/80), LDL cholesterol (<100 mg/dL), HDL cholesterol (> 50 mg/dL), triglycerides (< 150 mg/dL) and fasting blood sugar level (<100 mg/dL). Ask your doctor to provide you with these numbers each time he/she runs blood work on you.

Check your family history. If you have family members who have had heart disease or risk factors associated with it, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure, you may be at risk for the disease yourself. If you do have family members, i.e. parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, who have a history of heart disease, be sure and let your doctor know this information.

Reproductive issues. Women who have had high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia or toxemia are at a higher risk for heart issues during mid-life. Also, women who had gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes or heart disease.

Other health conditions. There are other health conditions, such as sleep apnea, kidney disease, arthritis and lupus that can increase a woman’s risk of heart issues such as heart attack or stroke.

Lifestyle changes. If you smoke, quit. Eat a healthy diet that is low in saturated fat and rich with fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Make it a point to exercise some each and every day.

Set up a screen schedule. Depending on your risk for heart disease based on your numbers, family history, other health conditions and lifestyle, get with your doctor and set up a schedule to have your numbers checked as often as your doctor deems necessary. By doing so, you can see if your lifestyle changes have had an impact on your health in general and on your risk for developing heart issues.
