Blood pressure is the force that the blood applies on the inner walls of the artery. Normal pressure in a healthy person would read 120/80. When the pressure falls below 90/60, the condition is referred to as low blood pressure or hypotension. While low pressure is generally indicative of some underlying health problem, it might appear in otherwise healthy people also. While some reasons for low pressure are harmless, others can be due to health complications. A heart disease such as low rate of heart, problems in the valves, or failure of the heart causes low pressure. Thyroid disorders, disease in the liver, over dosage of medicines for hypertension, low levels of blood sugar, deficiency of nutrients, side effects of certain medication, or allergy also cause fall in blood pressure. In the initial 6 months of pregnancy, women experience low blood pressure because of expansion of the blood circulation system. Children experience this condition for a while when they exert themselves by standing for long periods of time, have loss of blood or also as a result of dehydration. Symptoms of low pressure are dizziness, faintness or lightheadedness. Severe conditions show state of confusion, lapse in concentration, or spells of unconsciousness. Continued low blood pressure can result in depression. Such patients also complain of vision getting blur, tiredness, nausea or skin becoming clammy and cold. Low pressure affects the heart and lungs. The former manifests as pain in the chest, or angina. While the later causes breathing difficulty, or shallow or rapid breathing If any symptom persists along with headaches, unconsciousness or trouble in speech, immediate treatment is a must.
Being a wife of diabetic husband I know well about the symptoms of low blood sugar. Many times it looks that you do not have any control on the body and the sufferer is unable to figure out what is going on with his body or what is happening. It is better to have a closer look on the symptoms of low blood sugar. You’ll be surprised to know that many people have symptoms of low blood sugar but they do not know about it. Have you ever felt tired between 11 in the morning and 3 O’ clock in the evening? It is a classical sign of low blood sugar. Most people when start to feel tired and worn out, they become depressed and irritable. Most of the times they will hook on a soda drink or have a cup of coffee or eat some sweet snack. BOOM! They will suddenly feel that they have been energized as they had a spike in blood sugar level. May be that shows, there is no harm in this. It looks perfectly normal but for many this is not normal at all. The reason of tired and fatigued feelings during lunch hour is because of the diet. The chances are that a person had a sugar and a carbohydrate rich breakfast. Then you had a same type of lunch. This makes a vicious circle. It is a roller coaster and it is important to get off from such roller coaster for maintaining better health. The symptoms of low blood sugar last all the evening as well as the day. It is critical to keep a track of what is going on after having a sweet snack or having a cup of coffee. You can notice that the level of energy rises instantly. However this rise in energy does not last for more than one hour. This is the reason that we come across many people who hooked on to soda water after every hour or who drink about 10 cups of coffee daily. Most of us know that soda, coffee and tea contain sugar and caffeine. Both of these ingredients are brutal for the health structure of our bodies. The level of sugar rises at the cost of our liver glycogen. It is not difficult to spot the symptoms of low blood sugar. Early mornings are the worst time for the levels of blood glucose. At these times it is at the lowest level. You must have seen some people who are so irritable in the morning that nobody can talk to them unless they have their cup of tea or coffee. It is also interesting to note that most marital spats take place in the morning hours. Again blood glucose levels are the culprit. Give the same people a healthy breakfast and a coffee and see what happens. The personality will change in no time as now they would have the energy to tackle the whole day.

When someone talks of blood pressure problems, in most cases they refer to issues of high blood pressure. But low blood pressure is also a fairly common condition and it needs attention.

What are the causes of low blood pressure? It turns out there are quite a few of them.

Unearthing the causes of hypotension is important because they have to be dealt with before treating the clinical conditions of low blood pressure.

Anti-hypertensive drugs are one possible cause. If someone with high blood pressure continues to take such drugs without adequate supervision, it can result in a buildup of the drug in the body which can cause blood pressure to drop below acceptable levels.

That is why patients on beta-blockers must be monitored closely to ensure that they do not end up with adverse effects like hypotension.

Diuretic medications can cause this problem if the drugs are overused. In fact, they can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels if not taken correctly.

Cardiac problems can, of course, cause low blood pressure. Problems like tricuspid regurgitation, which is a valve-related issue, can result in the condition.

Traumas such as severe burns can lower blood pressure drastically. Burns affect the permeability of blood vessels which triggers the problem. Heat stroke is another possible cause of lowered pressure because it disrupts the fluid mechanism in the body.

Inflammation to organs like the pancreas may result in hypotension. So can respiratory problems like pneumothorax, as well as dysentery and other severe gastro intestinal problems.

Patients on nitrate medication may have a tendency to suffer from this condition. This is particularly true if they consume alcohol. For this reason, doctors usually advice against alcohol consumption when the patient takes nitrate drugs.

In reality, what constitutes low blood pressure often depends on the patient. There is a fine line between healthy low pressure and clinical hypotension.

As you can see, there are many possible causes of low blood pressure. Your health care giver’s judgment is crucial in deciding if you have hypotension and what treatment it requires.

Death will occur very quickly if the heart stops pumping blood around the body and stop delivering vital oxygen to the other organs, including the brain, so no doubt the heart is the most vital organ, among the whole organs of our body.

Despite its importance however many of us pay little if any attention to the health of our heart until forced to do so, when it is often too late. And yet keeping a check on the heart by simple routine measurement of our blood pressure could not be easier.

As with most things in life, if the heart starts to run into problems then there will be warning signs giving us time to take remedial action and these warning signs often come in the form of abnormally high or low blood pressure. The principle role of the heart is to take freshly oxygenated blood and pump it through the main arteries and then through a network of smaller blood vessels to all parts of the body. As the heart contracts forcing blood out into the arteries pressure is exerted on the walls of the arteries. Then, as the heart relaxes and its chambers refill ready to pump again the pressure in the arteries falls.

By measuring these two pressure levels we can get an indication of just how well the heart is pumping blood around the body and thus see whether or not it is working normally.

Until quite recently it was necessary to visit the doctor’s office to have your blood pressure measured. The doctor would place a cuff around your upper arm roughly at the level of the heart. He would then place his stethoscope over the brachial artery where it runs close to the surface of the skin on the inside of your arm at the elbow and proceed to inflate the cuff.

As the cuff is inflated it tightens around the arm preventing blood from flowing through the brachial artery. The pressure in the cuff, which is indicated by a mercury manometer attached to the cuff, is slowly released and the point at which blood starts flowing through the artery, and which the doctor hears as a “whoosing” sound through his stethoscope, is noted. This is the point at which the pressure in the cuff equals the pressure in the artery as the heart pumps blood through it and is known as the systolic pressure.

The doctor then continues to slowly release the pressure in the cuff and to monitor the sound of blood being pumped through the artery until no sound at all is detected. At this point the manometer indicates the pressure in the artery as the heart is at rest and refilling ready to pump again. This lower pressure is known as the diastolic pressure.

Blood pressure will vary from person to person and will also rise and fall within each of us depending on a variety of factors such as the time of day, our level of activity, whether we are feeling stressed, our general state of health and whether or not we are currently taking particular forms of medication.

For the average person at rest however systolic blood pressure will be around 120 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury) and diastolic blood pressure will be 80 mm Hg. As an indication of the degree of variation between individuals, and within any one person, the normal range of systolic pressure is considered to be 90 – 135 mm Hg and the normal range of diastolic pressure is 50 – 90 mm Hg.

If your blood pressure falls outside these readings, then your doctor will need to investigate further to discover why your blood pressure in either unusually high or unusually low.

Since most of us do not visit the doctor on a regular basis, and only venture into the surgery when we absolutely have to, it can often be many months, or even years, between blood pressure checks and we could well be walking around blissfully unaware that we have a time bomb ticking away inside us.

Today however there is a whole range of very simple to operate and relatively inexpensive blood pressure monitors available for use in our own homes and absolutely no reason at all for not keeping a regular eye on our most valuable organ.

So, before tragedy strikes either you or one of your loved ones, why not take a few minutes to check out the range of blood pressure monitors available and buy yourself some peace of mind.

And this can lead to several low blood pressure symptoms.

You may detect low blood pressure symptoms during the use of various drugs such as those used for surgery, anti-anxiety agents, treatment for high blood pressure, diuretics, heart medicines, antidepressants, narcotics, alcohol, and other types of drugs. You may notice the low blood pressure symptoms also because of dehydration, heart failure, or heart attack, anaphylaxis, shock, diabetes (especially in advanced stage), etc.
The most common low blood pressure symptoms are dizziness and lightheartedness. But there are other low blood pressure symptoms, and they are: a tendency to faint, black or maroon stools, chest pain, wheezing, irregular heart beat, consistent high fever, head ache, back pain, or stiff neck. If you happen to spot any of the low blood pressure symptoms, it is recommended that you consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Because of low blood pressure not enough blood reaches to all parts of the body and thus the cells do not receive the correct amount of oxygen and nutrients. Therefore, the waste products in the blood are not removed.

Don’t overlook the risk of low blood pressure if you cough with phlegm or if you are suffering from prolonged diarrhea, or if you are unable to eat or drink, or if you experience burning urinary symptoms or even if you are taking new medicines, because all these are low blood pressure symptoms.

When you start experiencing low blood pressure symptoms remember that the brain is the first organ to malfunction in such situations because it’s located at the top of the body and as a result you will experience dizziness or even fainting. You should be aware that if you don’t treat low blood pressure seriously it might lead to brain damage.

When you have low blood pressure, blood is not adequately supplied to the heart muscles and therefore breathlessness and chest tightness forms one of the common low blood pressure symptoms. When you have prolonged low blood pressure all organs start malfunctioning and this leads to shock.

You must take precautionary measures to avoid the situation from getting worse when you have low blood pressure and you must take your doctor’s advice. You must try to be more physically active and must try to lose weight. You should also maintain a healthy diet and limit your alcohol intake. All these will help you to keep your low blood pressure symptoms under control.

In spite of all the harmful aspects of low blood pressure, researchers say that it is better than high blood pressure because people experiencing low blood pressure symptoms tend to live longer than people suffering from high blood pressure symptoms do.

If you suspect you are suffering with low blood pressure you should consult your primary care physician straight away.
