The diagnosis and treatment of heart disease is something that should be determined by an experienced and qualified Philadelphia cardiologist, if you live in this U.S. city. Ailments that affect the heart are very serious and, in many cases, is life threatening. Therefore, anyone who suffers from this type of health condition requires the proper attention and care from the right specialist.

A highly trained Philadelphia cardiologist utilizes the most recent diagnostic techniques to help them provide their patients with an accurate diagnosis, so they can determine the cause of chest pain, heart palpitations, or other symptoms that may be present in an individual showing signs, or who may have, cardiovascular disease. There are various specialized tests that can be used to help assist in the diagnosis including: Holter Monitor recording, heart catheterization, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, nuclear stress testing, and chemical stress testing.

Once the problem has been diagnosed, cardiologists can then offer a wide range of both surgical and non-surgical treatments for those who have problems with heart pain (angina), heart rhythm abnormalities, diseases of the heart valves, heart attacks, and heart failure. Thus, it is important you find the right Philadelphia cardiologist for you. One who has the experience, the latest equipment in diagnosis and care, and who can provide you with the best treatment options for your condition.

Many of us are aware that the number one cause of death amongst people nowadays is heart disease. Although this statistic used to apply only to men and people of a certain age, it now also applies to women and the prevalence of heart disease seems to be increasing amongst young people. There are many factors which can increase your risk of contracting heart disease. If you are wondering, “am I at risk for heart disease?”, this article may be able to help answer your question.

A great way to find out if you are currently at risk of getting heart disease is to visit your doctor. The general recommendation is that you visit your general practitioner twice a year if you are in good health.

When you are visiting with your doctor, he or she will take your blood pressure, measure your heart rate, and possibly take some blood samples. If the doctor does not take any blood from you, you may want to request that a cholesterol test be performed anyway.

It is very important that you know and understand what your blood pressure and cholesterol levels are and what they mean. Having high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or both are indicators that you are at risk for heart disease.

People who do not take care of their health are also at risk. For example, if you smoke, are overweight, or frequently starve yourself, you are at a greater risk.

Fortunately, the leading cause of heart disease is lifestyle choices. Today, the biggest contributor is failing to eat a healthy diet and get enough exercise. It is very important that you eat the right foods and get the recommended amounts of nutrients in order to prevent heart problems. You should also start a regular exercise routine and keep in mind that if you are not sweating, you are probably not trying hard enough.

If you wait too long to see your doctor or to start taking preventative measures, diet and exercise may not be enough to help you get better. If this is the case, you may be prescribed a number of different medications that thin your blood, lower your cholesterol, and do a number of other things. You will also need to make lifestyle changes while taking these drugs.

Do not wait too long to have yourself checked out by a doctor. The sooner you begin taking preventative measures, the less likely it is that you will need drugs or surgeries to fix your heart.

High cholesterol is dangerous and it is crucial to control it at the earliest. To learn about supplements that can help lower cholesterol more naturally, I invite you to visit http://www.naturalcholesteroltreatment.net.

Rajagopalan helps you to understand how this natural remedy can help control cholesterol.

With the greatly modernized way of life today, certain diseases and physiological imparities are taking precedence over others. During any change in our immediate environment, our body is the last to adapt, because it has a complete physiological environment of its own. One of the major causes of this is an immediate change in lifestyle, which is instrumental in bringing about certain diseases, many of them actually lethal. The Coronary Heart disease is one of these diseases whose immediate triggering cause is not known.

However, it manifests itself in different forms of diseases, all centered in or about the heart, causing reduced functionality of the heart and blockages and stoppages of the arteries and primary blood vessels. This form of disease is not exclusive to any particular sex, age group or even, for that matter, social group. However, detailed studies have revealed some alarming trends regarding such heart diseases, which annually causes thousands of premature deaths in the conventionally ‘more modernized/urbanized’ regions.

Coronary Heart diseases generally manifest themselves most commonly in the form of a cardiac arrest, where the body goes into a form of seizure and the heart stops pumping blood. The arteries around the heart also constrict, owing to the reduced amount of blood being circulated. These attacks are extremely lethal, and in severe cases, the patient needs to be immediately hospitalized to avert a terminal result. Presently, such attacks may or may not be preceded by certain symptoms, so it’s always advisable to consult a general physician and store some useful medicine at the house to combat any such contingent necessity.

Symptoms of heart attacks include a sense of pressure and heaviness felt in the chest region, dyspnea and continued irregular/painful breathing and chest pain. The Chest pain may come in spasms, or as a blunt sensation that generally spreads across the chest, and is usually accompanied by fatigue, and in some cases, a sensation of angina. Usually, physicians advise immediate hospitalization during these cases.

Coronary heart disease might not be cured by domestically-available means, but it sure could be prevented. The most important step towards its prevention is maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle. While systematically eliminating the primary risk-factors associated with heart diseases like smoking, high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes and obesity, we could easily prevent heart diseases. A healthy, active lifestyle, including a balanced and nutritional diet and lots of exercise could actually strengthen our systems and inhibit the accumulation of excess fat in our body. As a result of which, our basic metabolism rates are bolstered and our body burns more calories.

Also, certain lifestyle changes are needed, like trying to reduce stress, anxieties and taking up activities that keep the body fit while invigorating the mind. Lifestyle experts recommend taking up activities like group sports and yoga, which not only keeps the body healthy but also keeps the body-weight under control. With a well balanced diet (one which includes reduced servings of animal protein except fish, and more of organic protein), plenty of exercises and an active lifestyle, one could easily keep heart diseases away.

Signs of blocked arteries are all around us virtually all the time. Most with mild signs of blocked arteries probably don’t recognize that there could be a larger problem looming if proactive steps aren’t taken to reverse the condition. Occasionally, when signs of blockage become more serious people ignore them choosing not to take action for a myriad of reasons both personal and private. In this article we will talk a little about what actually causes the blockage to occur in the first place and then get right into the signs of blocked arteries that everyone should be aware of.

The cause

Arteries are tube like. They have the ability to expand and contract, carry life giving blood and oxygen to every cell in our bodies. The inner lining of these life giving tubes is smooth allowing blood, cholesterol, white blood cells, and an number of other substances to flow freely through our bodies without incident. But when the arterial lining becomes damaged, from such things as high levels of cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure, or homocysteine amino acids a series of events are started in motion.

The first is the body recognizing that there has been damage and dispatching white blood cells to patch up the problem. The patch will be made up of a foam like substance consisting mainly of cholesterol. But what happens over time is that this path tends to attract additional cholesterol, dead cells, blood stream trash, and in the latter stages calcium. If allowed to go unchecked this deposit will eventually grow to a point where blood flow is reduced and hardening starts to take place due to the calcium. The obstruction is known as a plaque deposit and once it has produced 70 percent blockage signs will often start to be seen. Additionally, part of this plaque deposit could break off, lodging in a smaller vein or artery producing an embolism.

The signs

Where the blockage occurs will determine the signs. If the plaque deposit is reducing blood flow to the heart a tightness in the middle of the chest will be felt. This is known in medical terms as angina and those in denial will often simply write it off to a bad case of indigestion. Complicating the situation is that if the blockage is not too severe the chest tightness and/or pain will go away once they get home, get comfortable, and relax. If the pain fails to go away when at rest this is one of worst signs of blocked arteries and signals trouble ahead (a heart attack) and means the blockage may have reached 90 percent or more.

If the blockage is in the arteries supplying blood to the brain symptoms such as numbness, difficulty swallowing, difficulty speaking, blindness, mental disorientation, or paralysis can occur.

What can be done?

Certainly, if you notice any of the signs of blocked arteries you should talk with your doctor as soon as possible. He will likely run some tests and recommend that you change the way you eat, reduce stress levels, avoid tobacco smoke, encourage you to lose any excess weight, participate in moderate exercise program five or more days a week, and suggest a cholesterol lowering prescription medication or natural cholesterol reduction supplement if needed.

It should also be pointed out that if tests confirm major blockage surgery may be required to insert a stint to restore blood flow through the damaged artery.

Statin drugs have been around for a while now and the chances are pretty good that if you suffer from high cholesterol your doctor will prescribe one of a number of statin drugs. This would include household names such as Crestor and Lipitor along with other not so well known statin drugs including Pravachol, Lescol, and Zocor. These medications are also known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors.

Statin drugs work by interfering with the body’s ability to manufacture cholesterol by blocking the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme needed by the body to produce cholesterol. Less cholesterol in the body makes it possible for the liver to remove enough blood cholesterol to dramatically reduce bad cholesterol levels. The numbers vary as to how much, but generally speaking the estimates range from 30 to 50 percent over a relatively short period of time. Initial results will generally be seen in one or two weeks but continued use may be needed to sustain any benefits received. It should be pointed out that while very effective at reducing bad cholesterol (LDL) statin drugs only marginally improve good cholesterol levels (HDL).

Should statin drugs be my first line of defense at reducing high cholesterol?

Unless you have a condition that causes your cholesterol levels to be dangerously high conventional wisdom is that that diet, increased exercise, along with saying no to cigarette smoke (first or second hand) should be the first line of defense against heart and artery disease. Nevertheless, it seems many doctors are moving in the direction of prescribing statins first and suggesting diet, exercise, and other lifestyle modifications second.

Are there any risk involved with statin drugs?

We live in a world where prescription medications have become so common that we often forget there is a reason why you need a prescription to get them. This is indeed the case with statin drugs.

The most dangerous side effect is rhabdomyolysis. This condition can be best described as an excessive breakdown of muscle tissue creating a flood of waste cells that travel through the bloodstream and into the kidneys where they may clog small passages and theoretically cause kidney failure.

Other side effects associated with statin drugs are: fever, muscle pain, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, dark urine, allergic skin reactions, hives, itching, swelling of the tongue and face, trouble urinating, fatigue, jaundice (yellow eyes/skin), peeling or loosening of the skin, flatulence, headache, heartburn, indigestion, and stomach upset.

Before prescribing a statin drug you doctor will likely ask is your are heavy drinker, have kidney disease, liver disease, have muscle aches or weakness, have other medical conditions, have any history of allergic reactions, are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, or are breast feeding.

What next? For some the benefits of statin drugs outweigh the risks but for others this might not be the case. For those in the second group implementing a natural cholesterol reduction supplement first before placing yourself at risk of side effects could be a treatment alternative worth considering. Natural cholesterol reduction supplements have been found to be very effective in reducing bad cholesterol (LDL), raising good cholesterol (HDL), and dropping triglyceride levels, particularly when combined with diet and exercise.

Have you ever wondered which is the most important organ in the human body? You may or may not have asked yourself the question: which is more important, my heart or my brain? Regardless of what you read, there is perhaps no definite and single organ in the body that can be classed as the “most” important, primarily because the human body, the organism, functions as an interlinked network of the different organs which all have their individual functions culminating to produce both you and I.

However, what is clear is that the heart is the “battery” to our “electrical circuit” and without a functioning heart; a human would struggle to survive. This alone tells us that a healthy heart is therefore vital to our survival.

Therefore naturally we must now look at how we would define a “healthy” and an “unhealthy” heart. Would we say that a healthy heart is one in which pumps blood around the body to all organs and tissues? Well yes, in essence this is the role of the heart, to deliver oxygen and other blood components to cells around the body to enable them to survive and function.

However, this does not exactly enable us to define exactly what a “healthy” heart is, as equally an “unhealthy heart” still pumps blood around the body (albeit to a lesser extent). The point I am making here, without going into too much scientific detail about Cardiac Output, Starling’s Law, issues of infarction and the complications of cardiovascular disease such as Heart failure is that unlike other organs, where when something is not functioning correctly, it is quite clearly and quickly visible, the heart does not tend to present any problems with itself until the issues have progressed to their later stages, when it may be too late.

Maintaining a health heart with exercise and good eating regime will result in a smooth running machine and a longevity.

The exact incidence of congenital heart disease in children is approximately 8:1000 to 10:1000 live births. Congenital heart disease is the major cause of death in the first year (other than premature ones). Depending on the defect, the sexes are affected differently. Heart defects are found in a much higher percentage of stillbirths, spontaneous abortions, and low-birth-weight infants, especially those small for age.

The most common heart anomaly is ventricular septal defect.

Etiology

The etiology of most congenital heart defects is not known. However, several factors are associated with a higher than normal incidence of the disease. These include prenatal factors such as maternal rubella or other viruses, such as coxsackie-virus, during pregnancy, poor nutrition in the mother, maternal alcoholism, maternal age over 40 years, maternal insulin- dependent diabetes, and maternal ingestion of lithium salts.

Several genetic factors are also implicated in Congenital Heart disease. There is an increased risk of congenital heart disease in the child who has siblings with a heart defect. Has parent with congenital heart disease, has a chromosomal aberration, such as Down’s syndrome, or is born with other non-cardiac congenital anomalies.

Types of defects

Congenital heart defects are usually divided into two types, based on the alteration is circulation: acyanotic, in which there is no mixing of un-oxygenated blood in the systemic circulation. Cyanotic; in which un-oxygenated blood enters the systemic circulation, regardless of, if cyanosis is clinically evident.

Clinical manifestations depend on the severity of the defect and the amount of pulmonary blood flow. In acyanotic defects, no associated signs and symptoms may be apparent if the defect is small and the heart is able to compensate for the extra workload.

Altered Hemodynamics

To understand the physiology of heart defects, it is necessary to review the role of pressure gradients and flow resistance to blood circulation. Blood flows as a result of pressure gradients existing in different parts of the body, like any fluid, blood flows from an area of high pressure to one of low pressure. The rate of flow is directly proportional to the pressure gradient (that is, the higher the pressure gradient, the greater the rate of flow) and inversely proportional to the resistance (that is, the higher the resistance, the less the rate of flow). Normally the pressure on the right side of the heart is lower than on the left side, and the resistance in the pulmonary circulation is less than in the systemic circulation. Likewise, vessels entering or exiting from these chambers have corresponding pressures. Therefore, if there is an abnormal connection between the heart chambers, such as a septal defect, blood flows from an area of higher pressure (left side) to one of lower pressure (right side). This directional flow of blood is termed left-to-right shunt. If the hole is small, the amount of blood shunted to the atrium or ventricle may be minimal. In this instance no un-oxygenated blood flows directly into the left side of the heart, therefore, the term acyanotic defect is used.

Severe acyanotic defects are potentially cyanotic as a result of pulmonary vascular changes. Eisenmeng’s complex (syndrome) refers to the clinical situation in which a left-to-right shunt becomes a right-to-left shunt because of progressive increase in pulmonary vascular resistance. With increasing pulmonary vascular thickening the resistance in the pulmonary circulation can exceed that in the systemic circulation, causing a reversal of blood flow from the right to the left ventricle.

Cyanotic heart defects may be the result of anomalies that cause a change in pressure so that the blood is shunted from the right to the left side of the heart, hence termed right-to-left shunt, because of either increased pulmonary vascular resistance or obstruction to blood flow through the pulmonic valve/artery. Cyanosis may also occur because of a defect that allows direct communication between the pulmonary and systemic circulations, such as truncus arteriosus or transposition of the great vessels.

There is more to congenital heart defects but a clue such as this is the basis to understanding such anomalies in newly born children.

The chances are pretty good that during your last social lunch outing none of your friends asked you what your ratio HDL LDL was. On the other hand if they were aware that you may have struggled for years with high cholesterol they might have inquired about your cholesterol levels. Part of the reason for this is that while everyone has at least heard of high cholesterol, few outside the medical community actually know much about the lipoprotein carriers HDL (high density lipoproteins) and LDL (low density lipoproteins) and even fewer recognize the importance of the ratio HDL LDL. In this article we will briefly describe each one and then explain why the ratio HDL LDL is so important for cardiovascular health.

Generally, when 20 milliliters of blood is taken to perform a cholesterol test it is zipped of to the lab where a technician counts the cholesterol particles. The results will come back looking like this: 230 mg/dl.. Translation: you have 230 milligrams of total cholesterol in every deciliter (1/10th of a liter) of blood. Nothing is mentioned about those pesky LDL molecules (bad cholesterol) or HDL (good cholesterol). The truth of the matter is that if the ratio HDL LDL is out whack but your overall cholesterol reading is good you may be under the false assumption that all is well, when really it isn’t.

*HDL molecules are very dense. They don’t contribute to cholesterol laden plaque deposits. They are helpful because they collect and ferry cholesterol out of the body. They also seem to reduce existing arterial plaque deposits when they exist in sufficient numbers. An HDL reading around 50 is considered normal with below 40 being dangerously low.

*LDL molecules are very fatty. These molecules carry essential cholesterol through the arteries and to the cells. The problem is they may leave a little along the interior lining of the arteries. This is especially true when the arterial lining is no longer smooth, having been injured or nicked in some way. Over time these small deposits grow ever larger as other debris accumulates, reaching a crescendo when fibrous tissue forms, and calcium tops it off. Once these LDL driven plaque deposits grow large enough to restrict blood flow it is only a matter of time until a blood clot comes along and blocks the artery completely causing a heart attack or stroke.

As you can see it is a balancing act between good and bad. The ratio HDL LDL is referred to in medial terms as the cardiac risk ratio, because it gives us an indication as to whether cholesterol is being deposited into our arteries or being broken down and excreted. The total cholesterol to HDL ratio should be no higher than 4, and the LDL to HDL ratio no higher than 2.5. The more you can narrow the gap in between the two the better your chances will be of avoiding a heart attack or stroke.

What Next? Narrowing the ratio HDL LDL, in most cases, is about changing old habits, adopting new healthier habits, and enlisting the help of convention medications such as statins or natural cholesterol reducing remedies if needed. Put simply, this basically means finding ways to increase HDL (good cholesterol) and decrease LDL (bad cholesterol levels), and bring overall cholesterol down to acceptable heart healthy levels. Certainly the aforementioned statin drugs will be one of your options but they do carry a number of serious label warnings, and haven’t been shown to raise HDL very much, if at all. The side effect risks have made natural cholesterol reduction supplements combined with diet modification and exercise a safe and effective combination worth considering.
