Heart Disease – #1 Killer of Women Over 25

Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s national campaign to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of women over 25 in the United States.

Taking care of your heart is really all about just taking care of your health in general. Be holistic about it. Start by educating yourself about food and nutrition. Commit to eating less processed and prepackaged foods and adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Only when you prepare your own food will you have absolute control over what goes on your plate and into your body.

Just about everybody knows that those extra pounds are not good for your health or your heart. But what you do about it is another matter. Too many people seem to get concerned about their weight all at once and look for some crash diet regime that will make them slim in a few weeks. Avoid crash diets of any kind. Even if you do lose some weight you’ll probably put it back on almost as quickly as you lost it, but more importantly crash dieting can put a lot of extra stress on your body, including your heart.

The long-term solution is a lifestyle change. It can be easier to do than you think. The next time you go to the grocery store make sure that your carriage gets filled with items from around the perimeter of the store instead of the middle aisles where the processed and prepackaged food is. By just staying out of the middle aisles the processed food will not get in your carriage, will not get into your cupboards, and will not get into your body. If you are not sure what you can do with most fresh vegetables make sure you go out to a restaurant that offers a menu full of vegetable dishes. If you know the folks there, or if they seem friendly enough, tell your waiter that you would like to sample a plate of their best vegetable dishes. You may surprise yourself at how much you like well prepared vegetable dishes. It’s a great way to get good ideas about how you can prepare similar dishes at home.

The other half of a lifestyle change that will benefit your health and your heart is to get more active. Get out and walk more often. Here’s an idea. All big cities and lots of small cities have historical significance that they like to show off by hosting walking tours around the city. You get to see a lot and maybe even learn a few things that you may have not known before, and you have the pleasant experience of walking around that will make you want to do it again. Of course walking is not the only exercise you can do. Planting and tending a garden is great exercise plus you get the pay off of more fresh veggies. Wash the car instead of taking it through the carwash.

Once you get more active you may surprise yourself and start having fun doing a lot of things that you never thought of before. Fun is contagious and the more you have the more you want. Staying active and involved in lots of different things is also a good way to relieve stress. Everybody has a tough day at the office or two. Focusing your attention on something completely unrelated to work can help make that go away. And then there is always that warm bubble bath and scented candles.
